Resources for Music Educators

by Ann Kaskinen on 2022-07-21T08:00:00-04:00 in General / Multidisciplinary, K-5, Professional Learning (for Librarians and Educators) | 0 Comments

Rich with activities, lesson plans, research and innovative ideas, the professional journals found in the eResources from the Michigan eLibrary are the perfect digital resources to share with the K-12 music teacher in your life as he or she begins gearing up for the new school year. Found in either Academic Search Complete or Education Source, these publications provide both foundational and cutting-edge practices in music education.

American Music Teacher

Published by the Music Teachers National Association, American Music Teacher has articles from 1961 to present that inform, challenge and foster music education. In the June/July 2022 edition, Michele Wachter’s piece, Making the Most of Our Words, offers “research-backed strategies that can help teachers provide effective, meaningful, and productive feedback to students” at any age level.

Journal of General Music Education

With write-ups that invite teachers to consider creating music for video game worlds or to utilize iMovie as a creative tool to use music accompaniment with images, this academic journal is ideal for discovering great new ideas for the classroom.

Music Educators Journal

Gallo and Kuchenbrod’s contribution, “Can I Sing You My Song?” Songwriting in Elementary with Community Artist Mentors, offers teachers an excellent outline for how to partner with community members in the creation of meaningful lyrics that connect with topics that are both interesting and important to students.

School Band & Orchestra

In this month’s article, Inclusive Student Leadership: Lead from Any Chair, Dr. Matthew Arau shares an excellent way to invigorate and ignite the passion in students, especially during those back-to-school band camps. He notes that “leadership training should be presented and accessible to all students, not just the chosen few!”

In addition to the professional publications listed, JAZZed: The Jazz Educator’s Journal, the Journal of Singing, and Piano Magazine: Clavier Companion also offer great ideas for working with students in different musical capacities.
